A devastating traffic accident occurred just 15 minutes ago in Hong Kong, resulting in the loss of 10 lives. Initial reports indicate that the accident was caused by a catastrophic brake failure in a passenger vehicle traveling at high speed during a busy hour.
According to eyewitnesses and early statements from the Hong Kong Police Force, the vehicle, reportedly a large private van, lost control while descending a steep slope in the Mid-Levels area. Despite the driver’s efforts to stop the vehicle, it continued to accelerate before crashing into multiple cars, a bus stop, and finally a concrete barrier.
Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes, but the impact had already caused devastating damage. Ten people — including the van’s driver, several passengers, and nearby pedestrians — were confirmed dead at the scene. At least six others were seriously injured and have been rushed to Queen Mary Hospital for urgent treatment.
“I heard loud screeching noises, and then a huge crash. People were screaming and running everywhere,” said one witness, a shop owner located near the site of the accident. “It was chaos. The front of the van was completely destroyed.”
Authorities have sealed off the area as an investigation is underway. Preliminary evidence suggests that the brake system of the van failed completely, although the exact cause is yet to be determined. Traffic investigators and mechanical engineers have been dispatched to analyze the vehicle and gather more information.
Chief Superintendent Lau Ka-wai of the Hong Kong Traffic Branch said in a press briefing, “This is a deeply tragic event. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. We are working to determine exactly what happened and ensure full accountability. Mechanical failure is suspected, but we are keeping all possibilities open.”
This is one of the deadliest road accidents in Hong Kong in recent years. The government has issued an official statement expressing condolences and promising full support to the victims’ families. The Transport Department is also expected to review road safety protocols and vehicle inspection procedures in light of this incident.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee also expressed his sorrow: “I am heartbroken by the tragic accident that has taken so many lives. We will make sure that the injured receive the best possible care, and we are committed to a full and transparent investigation.”
As the city mourns, authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and remain patient as cleanup and investigations continue.
More details are expected to be released in the coming hours.
